The Amsler grid is a simple tool that can help you notice changes in your central vision. In PXE, small fragile blood vessels can sometimes leak or bleed under the retina. Early changes may cause straight lines to look wavy, bent, blurred, missing, or distorted.

Using the Amsler grid does not replace regular eye exams, but it can help you recognize a change that should be checked promptly by a retina specialist.

Use the grid as your eye doctor recommends. Test each eye separately, wear your reading glasses if you use them, and look directly at the center dot. If you notice a new change, do not wait for your next scheduled appointment. Contact your retina specialist or eye doctor promptly.
