Harper has been an actor for over fifty years. She got her start in the New York theater, appearing in shows ranging from Hair on Broadway to the avant-garde plays of Richard Foremen. Early film roles included star turns in Brian de Palma’s cult musical Phantom of the Paradise and in Suspiria, Dario Argento’s iconic horror film. She co-starred in films such as Stardust Memories with Woody Allen, My Favorite Year with Peter O’Toole, and Pennies from Heaven with Steve Martin. Most recently, she had a role in Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 version of Suspiria, and in his latest, Bones and All, with Timothée Chalomet. Upcoming are roles opposite Jessica Chastain in Michel Franco’s film Memory and in Nightbitch with Amy Adams. Her numerous television credits include an award-winning role as Garry’s wife in It’s Garry Shandling’s Show. She can currently be seen in the series, See, on AppleTV+, and in Hulu’s The Old Man. Upcoming in ‘23 is a recurring role in Fatal Attraction from Paramount+.
Jessica Harper is the author of eleven books for children (published by HarperCollins and G.P. Putnam’s Sons), including the Los Angeles Times bestseller Nora’s Room. She also wrote a humorous cookbook/memoir, The Crabby Cook Cookbook (Workman Publishing), about which Ruth Reichl said, “Too much fun! You’re standing in the kitchen laughing when you should be cooking!” In 2018, Harper wrote and produced an audio memoir published as a podcast called Winnetka. The story of her childhood in a Chicago suburb, Winnetka garnered stellar reviews and was featured on iTunes’ New and Noteworthy list.
Jessica lives in New York and Los Angeles and has two grown daughters. She and her brother Sam have PXE. Jessica has been a board member of PXE International for many years, with her focus on fundraising.
